Abstract

Inferior alveolar nerve runs through a mandibular canal and reaches to lower lip and
anterior portion of mandible. The nerver extends beyond the mental foramen through
anterior loop, which has superio-latero-posterior direction of run. The location of the
mental foramen and anterior loop can be a limiting factor of implant installation or
genioplasty. The nerve injuries due to such operations can cause the numbness of lower
lip. Therefore, we performed this study to survey the locations of mental foramen and
anterior loop.
The orthopantomograms of 10 volunteers(20 to 29 years old0were traced and analyzed.
The locations of mental foramen was estimated and the distances between mental
foramens and anterior loops were measured.
In results,
1. The mental foramens were commonly found on mesial half area of second premolar.
2. Anterior extension of the loops were commonly found on distal half area of first
remolar.
3. The average distance between mental foramen and apex was 3.08§®.
4. The average distance between mental foramen and anterior loop was 3.52§®.
5. The average distance between mental foramen and lower border of mandibular canal
was 4.96§®.
